About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Interpret physician referrals and conduct speech and language evaluations for speech, language, voice, cognitive, and swallowing disorders
  • Establish written plans of care and implement individualized treatment using appropriate techniques
  • Monitor and evaluate outcomes, adjust treatment plans, and provide updates to physicians and teammates
  • Identify and address patients’ physical and psychosocial comfort needs
  • Complete patient discharges, including home programs, patient/family teaching, community-service referrals, transition planning, and equipment ordering
  • Communicate and collaborate with stakeholders to optimize patient care
  • Complete evaluations, progress notes, team conference reports, discharge summaries, statistics, billing, and scheduling documentation
  • Apply insurance authorization and visit guidelines and maintain productivity standards
  • Clean treatment areas, store equipment, and perform patient positioning, transport, lifting, and pushing/pulling duties
  • Use modalities, exercise equipment, and other devices safely and appropriately
  • Follow safety and infection-control measures
  • Participate in performance-improvement activities and quality-of-care initiatives
  • Manage assigned caseload and assist with coverage based on department and regional needs
  • Pursue professional growth through continuing education, department in-services, and professional literature
  • Orient new staff and provide requested coworker evaluation feedback
  • Supervise and delegate to non-licensed personnel when applicable
  • Support student clinical education by monitoring and directing at least one student annually when students are available
  • Provide primarily outpatient care with a monthly weekend rotation supporting acute hospital coverage

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited school, or educational requirements commensurate with the date of graduation
  • Speech Language Pathologist license issued by the state in which the teammate practices; licensure in at least one supported state is required prior to hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association, obtained within 90 days unless determined not required
  • No experience required
  • Intermediate computer skills
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organization, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
  • Completion of all competency assessments and requirements for patient care
  • Maintenance of annual educational requirements for hospital-based certifications
  • Knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate patient care and assess growth and development across the lifespan
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, and squat throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist; lift up to 10 lbs. from waist to overhead; and carry up to 40 lbs. at waist height
  • Ability to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force and perform a 150-lb. sliding transfer with a second person
  • Functional use of senses for effective communication
  • Ability to wear protective clothing around electrical, chemical, blood, and body-fluid hazards
  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary for the job
