About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide a clean, safe and efficient area conducive to optimal patient care
  • Utilize aseptic surgical techniques to prepare materials, supplies and equipment for surgical procedures
  • Assist with gowning and gloving, preparation and draping of the surgical area, provision of a sterile field, and passing instruments and supplies
  • Anticipate surgeons' needs and assist in maintaining a sterile, dry, unobstructed field
  • Perform all types of procedures and maintain basic knowledge of a variety of procedures
  • Ensure environmental disinfection, safety and efficiency of the operating room
  • Set up operating rooms for each case, move and operate equipment, and return equipment after procedures
  • Function as a Second Assistant as necessary
  • Notify appropriate staff of equipment and supply problems
  • Transport patients, equipment and supplies
  • Maintain a specialty cart or item, including checking equipment condition and sterility and sending damaged items for repair
  • Perform patient positioning and transporting duties involving lifting and pushing/pulling
  • Provide age-appropriate patient care according to department policies and procedures

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Completion of an accredited or approved program in Surgical Technology
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required
  • No experience required
  • Knowledge of aseptic surgical techniques used in the preparation of materials, supplies and equipment for various surgical procedures
  • Knowledge of various types of equipment used in the operating room
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Annual educational requirements for hospital based certifications
  • Ability to withstand a very stressful and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. over the head
  • Ability to carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance
  • Ability to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force
  • Ability to perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present
  • Ability to use foot pedals on carts or machines
  • Functional sight and hearing
  • Ability to wear masks, gloves, goggles, and gowns
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders and twist frequently during work shift
  • Ability to operate all equipment essential to performing the duties of the job
