About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the soft drinks and alcohol packaging team within AG Barr
  • Own finished-product packaging specifications and the portfolio of innovation, cost-saving, continuity-of-supply and sustainability projects
  • Drive packaging strategy from initial concept through market launch
  • Lead delivery, testing and implementation of packaging solutions
  • Ensure legal compliance, brand protection, quality standards, technical robustness, risk assessment, cost effectiveness and on-time commercialisation
  • Recruit, train, motivate and manage packaging team performance
  • Represent packaging on internal business forums and manage stakeholder expectations
  • Monitor sustainability, packaging and consumer trends and conduct competitor benchmarking
  • Improve the team's Quality Management Systems and ensure procedures are followed
  • Lead sustainability projects and future packaging obligations involving EPR and DRS
  • Conduct Life Cycle Assessments or Life Cycle Perspectives
  • Provide technical guidance on packaging and mitigate recipe, packaging and machinery-interface risks
  • Manage trials and first products between R&D and manufacturing sites
  • Manage and control the packaging development budget
  • Develop R&D strategies for new packaging technologies
  • Drive R&D digital transformation using Product Lifecycle Management architecture and explore AI-driven tools
  • Manage supplier relationships and develop supplier strategies with Procurement
  • Build an external network of suppliers, universities, research centres and trade bodies
  • Attend conferences and networking events

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a scientific discipline, packaging technology or engineering
  • Extensive knowledge of packaging components and materials used in the soft drinks and alcohol industry
  • Sound knowledge of drinks manufacturing, including bottle making, bottle filling, packing and palletisation
  • Understanding of packaging regulations, British and European Standards, plastics migration directives, and related legislation
  • Knowledge and operation of ISO, BRC, HACCP and other quality management systems
  • ISO 9001 and BRC packaging-material specification approval procedures knowledge
  • Creative, innovative and practical approach
  • Good analytical approach to problem solving
  • Experience assessing, developing and improving core R&D processes and ways of working
  • Ability to coach and develop a high-performing team
  • Ability to understand consumer behaviour through consumer research and translate it into packaging solutions
  • Commercial awareness and ability to communicate with consumers and technical stakeholders
