About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Act as the lead technical authority for the material integrity and functional performance of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging components
  • Design and execute technical validation programmes and factory trials for new packaging formats, including container shapes, closure systems, and collation materials
  • Lead material science workstreams, including profiling and qualification of new resins and recycled material blends
  • Ensure carbonation retention and structural performance of packaging materials
  • Collaborate with Procurement and Production to identify and validate supply chain optimisations, lightweighting initiatives, and material efficiency projects
  • Own technical specifications for packaging materials and ensure compliance with AG Barr quality standards and environmental and packaging legislation
  • Provide technical governance within the Stage & Gate process
  • Manage material and manufacturing risk and feasibility
  • Serve as the technical bridge between packaging concepts and commercial reality across AG Barr’s supply chain

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Education to degree level or equivalent in Packaging, Science or Engineering, with significant post-graduate experience in a technical packaging role within an FMCG business
  • Proven expertise in technical validation and material profiling across multiple formats, including polymer performance (PET/rPET), injection/stretch blow moulding, aluminium cans, glass, and carton packaging such as Tetra Pak
  • Experience leading complex factory trials and bridging R&D specifications with high-speed operational reality
  • Sound knowledge of packaging material manufacture, liquid filling technologies, bottle labelling, multipacking, and palletisation within the drinks industry
  • Knowledge and operation of GFSI, BRC, HACCP, and other quality management systems is essential
  • Ability to assess and manage technical risks, develop robust trial protocols, and establish definitive packaging specifications
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and external suppliers
