About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Interview applicants and recipients, adapting techniques to client needs and abilities
  • Determine eligibility for assistance and benefit levels using automated systems and manual methods
  • Process applications for SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, Energy, General Relief, Auxiliary Grants, Refugee Cash and Medical Assistance programs
  • Compile and analyze information and policy to determine and redetermine ongoing eligibility
  • Compute income and resource eligibility according to complex state and federal guidelines
  • Explain benefit programs, rights and responsibilities, agency services and community resources
  • Identify social problems and make referrals to social workers
  • Research, interpret and apply mandated program policies and procedures
  • Maintain records and caseload integrity, identify errors or potential fraud and make referrals
  • Evaluate data consistency and completeness and substantiate accuracy when needed
  • Respond to appeal requests, prepare appeal summaries and supporting documentation, and participate in appeal hearings
  • Participate in unit and agency meetings, workgroups and teams
  • Attend ongoing training and professional development opportunities
  • Recommend changes to internal policies and procedures
  • Perform related tasks as required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma supplemented with additional training and related work experience, or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • General knowledge of interviewing and time management skills and principles and practices of public social service organizations
  • Knowledge of current social, economic and health problems, human behavior and social functioning
  • Knowledge of mathematics to calculate percentages, formulas and averages
  • Knowledge of interviewing techniques, data collection and investigation
  • Ability to analyze information and policy and identify missing information and gaps
  • Ability to access data such as estates, retirement accounts and real estate
  • Ability to maintain professional ethics related to confidentiality
  • Ability to operate a computer and software
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas orally and in writing
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports
  • Ability to organize and manage own work schedule
  • Ability to plan, manage, coordinate and prioritize multiple activities and projects
  • Must meet the County’s safe driver policy eligibility requirements
  • Must be willing to travel occasionally overnight
  • May be subject to criminal history and central registry background checks
  • Strongly preferred but not required: bachelor's degree
  • Strongly preferred but not required: direct eligibility experience
  • Strongly preferred but not required: experience working successfully within a team
  • Strongly preferred but not required: experience working with populations with limited English proficiency
