About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Determine where and how new generation resources, including wind, solar, battery storage, and natural gas, connect to the grid
  • Support planning, design, and development of systems across generation, transmission, and distribution
  • Participate in MISO interconnection planning
  • Identify and solve problems within the assigned area of responsibility
  • Maintain communication and relationships with employees, business stakeholders, and contractors
  • Discuss technical issues with non-technical audiences
  • Apply regulatory and organizational engineering standards and recommend process or procedure changes
  • Facilitate meetings and lead stakeholder discussions supporting system studies
  • Interpret governmental regulations, regional or company practices, and develop recommendations for system issues or Planning Criteria violations
  • Apply risk assessment methodologies and make risk decisions with limited guidance
  • Participate in departmental and cross-functional teams to address technical or operational problems
  • Participate in budgeting and planning processes
  • Oversee multi-year plans and develop scopes of work with cost estimates, sequencing, and prioritization
  • Classify capital investment projects versus O&M spend work
  • Build system models and perform power flow studies or analysis
  • Support modifications to existing or development of new interconnection agreements, including cost sharing
  • Support technical reviews and studies for distribution energy resource interconnection applications
  • Apply power quality concepts
  • Perform other duties supporting Alliant Energy's values and purpose

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Engineer I: Bachelor's Degree Engineering program accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission required
  • Engineer II: 2 years of related experience and Bachelor's Degree Engineering program accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission required
  • Engineer III: 5 years of related experience and Bachelor's Degree Engineering program accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission required
  • Senior Engineer: 7 years of related experience and Bachelor's Degree Engineering program accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission required
  • Knowledge of system modeling methodologies and software
  • Ability to build moderately complex models and perform power flow studies or analysis
  • Understanding of interconnection agreements, terminology, and technical requirements
  • Understanding of tools, data, and processes for technical reviews and distribution energy resource interconnection studies
  • Understanding and application of power quality concepts
  • Must successfully complete a background check and drug screen where applicable
