About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Provide advice and counsel to the Claims Department on legal issues arising during claims handling, including coverage opinions, conditional demand responses, large losses, releases, rejected tenders, multiple competing claims, and new laws or court decisions
Advise the Claims Organization on complex claims and large losses with potential extracontractual or bad faith exposure
Provide training and education on emerging legal trends, issues, risks, new laws, and court decisions
Work with business colleagues and other in-house legal teams to develop and implement claims-handling recommendations
Deliver legal counsel on high-exposure, complex insurance claims and coverage issues during active claims handling
Prepare attorney conditional demand responses
Support the Claims Organization and leadership in mitigating legal risk and minimizing reliance on outside counsel

Requirements

What you’ll need

Juris Doctorate degree
Licensed to practice law and in good standing within State of Practice
7 or more years of claims legal experience
3 or more years of coverage experience
Strong project management abilities
Ability to collaborate with personnel at all organizational levels and provide guidance to junior team members
Subject matter expertise to support and advise less experienced colleagues
Proficient in computer applications, including the Microsoft Office Suite
Experience using technology to support daily work and analysis
Familiarity with LexisNexis or comparable research platforms
Demonstrated coverage experience across multiple jurisdictions
Experience handling complex attorney conditional demands in multiple jurisdictions
Background in insurance defense or extra-contractual and bad faith litigation
Background investigation required
Dedicated, private workspace free from distractions when working from home
Reliable internet with minimum speeds of 50 MB download and 5 MB upload
