About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support senior lawyers with regulatory change management by monitoring UK, EU and global financial-services, payment-services, payment-scheme and financial-crime developments and reporting internally.
  • Advise on and support compliance with UK payment-services regulations, EU PSD2 and PSD3/PSR1, Interchange Fee Regulation, financial-crime legislation, digital currencies, cryptoassets, and ESG requirements.
  • Support advice on licensing, prudential regulation, governance and conduct regulation under PSD2/PSD3, including licence applications, passporting submissions and agent appointments.
  • Support advice on cross-border structures, passporting and third-party arrangements, including outsourcing and agency arrangements.
  • Support FCA authorisation and supervision matters, UK/EU regulatory reviews and inspections, and responses to information requests.
  • Support engagement with regulators, trade associations and stakeholders on proposed regulatory developments and assess business impact.
  • Support regulatory aspects and strategy for new product launches and business expansion.
  • Brief colleagues and clients on significant developments and projects, including preparing and supporting trainings or presentations.
  • Support senior lawyers in instructing and finalising external counsel opinions and advice.
  • Attend relevant training courses and support the Global Payments Systems Regulation Centre of Excellence.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Qualified to practise law in the UK with experience advising on regulatory matters in the UK and EU.
  • Professional experience ideally in financial services regulation matters in a law firm, regulator or in-house.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following areas: payment services, payment schemes, e-money, AML, FSMA.
  • Willingness to learn and become an expert in these fields.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Solid drafting, research and negotiation/influencing skills.
  • Solid analytical skills and high attention to detail.
  • Experienced career paralegals with substantial financial services regulatory background may also apply.
  • Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the UK is required; the company will not pursue visa sponsorship.
