About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Identify new product or service changes and material business changes subject to relevant American Express policies and standards
- Create and execute a GMNS framework for categorizing and risk-assessing changes under appropriate policies and standards
- Develop, implement, and scale risk assessment approaches covering strategic, operational, and compliance risks
- Continuously enhance change risk assessment methodologies, governance standards, risk taxonomy, and decision criteria
- Partner with Product, Technology, Digital, Operations, Pricing, Enterprise Risk, and other business units to identify emerging risks and recommend mitigation strategies
- Drive change risk assessment governance forums and prepare risk summaries, recommendations, and executive decision materials
- Track mitigation actions and report portfolio health, key risks, and emerging themes to senior leadership
- Identify cross-program risks and systemic issues across transformation initiatives
- Develop risk profile reporting and communicate operational risk trends, assessment data, themes, and activities to senior management
- Manage a small team of high-performing professionals
- Enable informed senior management decision-making through independent operational risk assessment and governance
Requirements
What you’ll need- 8+ years of experience in operational risk management, such as within Risk and/or Internal Audit
- Understanding of critical operational risk management lifecycle activities
- Excellent project management, communication, and interpersonal skills, with ability to interact with and obtain buy-in from senior business unit and technology counterparts
- Expertise in process governance and establishing and overseeing robust decision-making processes aligned with policies, regulatory frameworks, and/or operational standards
- Experience within the financial services industry
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including analyzing data, identifying trends, and evaluating risk scenarios
- Ability to demonstrate thought leadership and drive initiatives through implementation
- Demonstrated ability to manage large programs and influence horizontally across geographically distributed teams with varying backgrounds
- Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the United States; visa sponsorship will not be pursued
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management, or related field is preferred
- Advanced degrees or certifications are advantageous
