About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Own the technical design, development, implementation, and support of on-premises and public cloud database platforms
Lead hands-on architecture, design, and engineering of scalable, resilient, secure, and highly available database solutions
Analyze complex system architectures to identify technical risks, dependencies, performance bottlenecks, and improvement opportunities
Design and implement solutions that enable, modernize, and enhance enterprise database platform capabilities
Partner with Product Owners and engineering teams to understand requirements and ensure effective technical design and implementation
Leverage cloud-native and emerging technologies to drive platform modernization, automation, scalability, and operational efficiency
Evaluate existing platform implementations and dependencies and drive continuous improvements in performance, reliability, security, and maintainability
Apply knowledge of network, compute, and storage topologies to define optimal platform architectures
Provide rotational production support, troubleshoot complex issues, and ensure platform stability and availability
Promote engineering best practices, automation, and continuous improvement across the database platform lifecycle
Build the next generation of public and private cloud database platforms for American Express

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor's or master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or other technical discipline, or equivalent work experience
8+ years of database administration experience, preferably in PostgreSQL, Couchbase, Mongo and Cassandra
4+ years of development experience programming in Python and Terraform
Experience with system configuration using Ansible
5+ years of Linux administration experience
Hands-on experience deploying public cloud services related to network, security, compute and database services
Experience coding Terraform modules with various providers
Experience with container and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift is a plus
Ability to interpret technical and business objectives and challenges and articulate solutions
Willingness to learn new technologies and use them effectively
Willingness to provide on-call support on a rotating basis
Demonstrated Agile practices, programming languages and frameworks, business analysis, analytical thinking, and business product knowledge
Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the United States; the company will not pursue visa sponsorship
