Develop new products and platforms for American Express customers
Build mobile payment solutions used by tens of millions of cardholders worldwide
Develop interactive experiences across consumers' journeys before, during, and after purchase
Design and develop enterprise-grade backend applications using Java 8+ and Kotlin
Design and develop RESTful APIs and microservices
Implement secure application development practices and cryptographic mechanisms
Build scalable, resilient, and high-performance distributed systems
Apply multithreading, asynchronous programming, concurrency, synchronization, and performance optimization
Perform code reviews, mentor engineers, and drive engineering best practices
Troubleshoot production issues, improve application performance, and enhance system reliability
Collaborate across engineering, architecture, and product teams

Requirements

What you’ll need

5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend application development
Extensive experience designing, developing, testing, and deploying enterprise applications using Java 8+ and Kotlin
Hands-on experience implementing asynchronous and concurrent applications using Completable Future, Java Streams, Executor Framework, and Java concurrency utilities
Experience designing and building scalable RESTful APIs and microservices
Experience implementing application security using JWE, encryption libraries, secure key management practices, and industry-standard cryptographic protocols
Experience securing APIs using authentication and authorization standards such as OAuth 2.0, JWT, and TLS/SSL
Experience developing applications in distributed, multi-tier architectures
Experience with relational and NoSQL databases
Experience with Agile software development methodologies, including Scrum or Kanban
Experience writing automated unit, integration, and performance tests
Experience performing code reviews, mentoring engineers, and driving engineering best practices
Experience troubleshooting production issues, improving application performance, and enhancing system reliability
Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering, architecture, and product teams
Strong proficiency in Java 8+ and Kotlin
Strong understanding of object-oriented design, SOLID principles, and common design patterns
Strong understanding of multithreading, asynchronous programming, concurrency, synchronization, and performance optimization
Experience with Maven or Gradle build tools
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
Preferred: Vert.x or other reactive frameworks; Couchbase or other NoSQL databases; OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and enterprise authentication/authorization frameworks; Kafka or similar messaging platforms; Docker and Kubernetes; AWS, OpenShift, or Google Cloud; CI/CD pipelines; Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience is nice to have
