About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide technical leadership for the design, development and delivery of scalable, secure and resilient software solutions.
- Drive architecture, engineering standards and technology strategy across multiple teams and platforms.
- Contribute hands-on to design reviews, code reviews, prototyping and complex problem solving.
- Design and implement distributed systems, APIs, event-driven architectures and cloud-native solutions at enterprise scale.
- Champion CI/CD, automated testing, observability, reliability engineering and operational excellence.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, industry trends and open-source capabilities.
- Partner with product, architecture, security and platform teams to translate business objectives into technology solutions.
- Lead root cause analysis of critical production issues and improve reliability, performance and scalability.
- Influence technical direction across organisational boundaries and establish reusable patterns, frameworks and engineering best practices.
- Identify technical barriers and drive adoption of modern platforms, tooling and development approaches.
- Mentor and coach engineers at all levels.
- Build alignment and consensus across engineering, product and business stakeholders.
- Communicate technical strategy, risks, trade-offs and recommendations to senior leadership and non-technical audiences.
- Support talent development through mentoring, knowledge sharing and technical growth opportunities.
- Act as a trusted technical adviser on strategic technology decisions.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 8 years' experience designing, building and operating large-scale software systems in a complex enterprise environment.
- Deep expertise in one or more modern programming languages and technology stacks.
- Proven experience designing distributed systems, microservices, APIs and event-driven architectures.
- Strong understanding of cloud platforms, containerisation, infrastructure automation and modern software delivery practices.
- Recent experience applying relevant AI tools and integrating AI or machine learning models into software products to improve user experience, engineering productivity, or business outcomes.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, source control, automated testing and engineering productivity tooling.
- Strong knowledge of data platforms, relational and NoSQL databases, and system integration patterns.
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams without direct authority.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proven track record of mentoring engineers and developing technical capability within an organisation.
- Curiosity and passion for technology, continuous learning and innovation.
- Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the UK is required; the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.
