About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assist physicians with in-office medical procedures
- Perform phlebotomy, blood draws, laboratory testing, quality control, instrument troubleshooting, and maintenance
- Perform laboratory blood work and handle/process specimens according to laboratory procedures
- Prepare blood or bone marrow slides for evaluation
- Send outside labs to appropriate facilities according to patients’ insurance plans
- Maintain test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists
- Follow patient identification policies and procedures
- Obtain and document vital signs, height, weight, pain level, and PHQ9 depression screening in the Onco/EMR system
- Place patients in exam rooms and prepare them for physicians
- Receive and document lab reports in patient charts or Onco/EMR for physician review
- Assist with bone marrows, fine needle aspirates, paracenteses, and pelvic exams
- Schedule outside testing, physician referrals, and hospital admissions as ordered
- Document testing and treatment in medical records; prepare encounter forms or complete EMR superbill steps
- Document QC and QA corrective actions
- Show physicians critical blood counts according to guidelines
- Obtain scans and CDs for physician review
- Maintain supply inventory and place purchasing orders
- Troubleshoot instrument malfunctions and contact central lab or service companies when needed
- Perform EKG testing where applicable
- Maintain laboratory compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies and perform compliance testing
- Complete required annual CEUs for C.O.L.A. requirements
- Observe safety guidelines and maintain laboratory and equipment cleanliness
- Comply with laws, regulations, and organizational policies regarding patient care, rights, safety, billing, collections, IT, disaster recovery, and confidentiality
- Assist in training new employees
- Work at any AON location as needed
- Work overtime with sufficient notice
- Perform other job-related duties assigned by supervisors or management
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School or GED
- Certifications/licenses as required by state where employed
- BLS required
- Valid Driver’s License and vehicle for travel to other clinic locations as needed
- One-year experience as a medical assistant in clinic or physician’s office with ability to perform venipuncture
- Critical thinking, problem-solving, analysis, decision-making, planning, time management, and organizational skills
- Detailed orientation and ability to exercise independent judgment
- Developed interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, diplomacy, tact, conflict management, delegation skills, and diversity awareness
- Ability to work effectively with sensitive and confidential material and emotionally charged matters
- Good command of the English language
- Effective oral, written, and presentation communication skills; active listening and feedback skills
