About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design, implement and maintain reliable, testable Python services, applications and libraries supporting AppGate ZTNA
Build software managing Linux processes, services, namespaces, permissions, capabilities, signals, filesystems and operating-system primitives
Design and maintain systemd units, service dependencies, socket-activated services, cgroup-based resource controls and application lifecycle management
Instrument applications and platform services with OpenTelemetry, including metrics, logs and distributed traces
Establish observability practices, operational health indicators and debugging standards
Develop and troubleshoot services involving TCP/IP, TLS, routing, firewalls, network namespaces and secure platform communication
Develop automation for provisioning, configuring, upgrading and operating distributed PostgreSQL databases
Use and improve internal development, testing, build and release tools
Apply testing, fault-handling, observability and security practices to production mission-critical software
Contribute to or define architecture, engineering standards and best practices for Linux platform development, Python services and systems integration
Lead complex cross-team initiatives, participate in design and code reviews, and mentor platform and systems engineers
Communicate through technical documentation, design proposals, code reviews and written project updates in a distributed work environment

Requirements

What you’ll need

Significant software, platform or systems engineering experience; senior-level candidates typically have 5+ years, staff-level candidates 8+ years, and principal-level candidates 12+ years
Expert proficiency in Python, including production-grade, maintainable and testable code
Experience implementing Linux functionality programmatically in Python, including wrapping system calls, managing system resources and automating operating-system configuration
Strong understanding of observability principles and experience integrating OpenTelemetry into applications and distributed systems
Strong understanding of TCP/IP, TLS, routing, firewalls and network troubleshooting
Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate in an asynchronous, remote work culture
Willingness to learn independently, investigate unfamiliar systems and take responsibility for expanding personal and team knowledge
Comfortable developing, maintaining and improving internal engineering tools, pipelines and workflows
Senior-level ownership of complex systems and projects; staff- and principal-level record of setting technical direction, leading cross-team initiatives and mentoring experienced engineers
Preferred: Debian packaging, STIGs, TeamCity, EnterpriseDB PGD, VMware vSphere or other virtualization, Docker, AWS, Kubernetes, and cryptography fundamentals
