Key responsibilities & impact

Develop, implement, and maintain software solutions supporting business operations and company objectives
Perform analysis, design, coding, debugging, testing, and support of software applications
Develop new applications and systems, enhance or upgrade existing systems, or provide production support
Work independently on moderately complex projects with general direction
Provide assistance and direction to less experienced peers
Capture stakeholder requests and system specifications and translate them into design specifications, source code, test scripts, and test results
Coordinate with software architects and Software Engineer IVs to align engineering work with Enterprise Architecture principles and software development best practices
Complete application design, coding, code review, and testing as part of Agile teams
Keep the Agile team and Agile Program Manager informed of project status
Advise stakeholders on effective and efficient approaches to project and program objectives
Track and communicate engineering risks and devise mitigation methods
Coordinate interdependencies with other project and program areas and resolve issues
Support business units with complex user questions and issues following production support processes and SLAs
Maintain working knowledge of new technology and software engineering standards, practices, and tools
Provide input to the Agile Program Manager and Digital Product Manager on product roadmaps and high-level estimates
Collaborate with IT management to define documentation and engineering artifact standards, guidelines, processes, and templates

Requirements

What you’ll need

Development experience with Java, SQL, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
Experience with scalable, high-availability back-end database technologies, primarily SQL Server
Experience building microservices with Spring Boot and building/calling APIs
Experience with non-relational database technologies such as Memcached, MongoDB, or Redis is a plus
Strong JavaScript back-end development experience with frameworks such as Angular and Node
Front-end development experience including HTML5, CSS, Bootstrap, jQuery, accessibility, responsive layouts, and UI/UX
Knowledge of reporting tools such as Power BI and SSRS
Experience with insurance/reinsurance systems and data
Strong understanding of server-side software, scalability, performance, and reliability
Strong understanding of the OSI model, networking, operating system layers, and services
Understanding of continuous delivery tools such as Chef, Puppet, and Salt
Understanding of continuous integration and deployment tools such as Octopus Deploy and Jenkins
Proficiency in Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML5, CSS, Windows, IIS, Linux, Tomcat, JBoss, Visio, T-SQL, SSIS, and shell scripting
Willingness to work with unknown code and new technology while paying attention to detail
Excellent communication skills
Ability to clearly speak and understand English
Excellent command of written English
Ability to explain and simplify technology for non-technical people
Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field
At least 3–5 years of software (Java) development experience
