About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Join Arista Networks’ Extensible Operating System (EOS) software development team
Build features for large data center networks
Develop software for Arista’s Linux-based EOS network operating system running on data center networking products
Gather and understand functional and technical requirements with fellow engineers and marketing team members
Write functional specifications, design specifications, and test plans
Implement software features in C, C++, and Python
Create and execute automated tests
Debug and fix issues found by automated tests
Work on routing protocol problems with a software team
Analyze customer-network problems with Customer Support Engineers and provide software releases or patches
Analyze System Test Engineer findings and provide fixes
Mentor new and junior engineers
Review and contribute to team specifications and implementations
Create and maintain implementation and debugging schedules and report weekly to the project lead
Own projects from definition through deployment and ensure delivery quality

Requirements

What you’ll need

BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering plus 8 years of experience, or MS plus 6 years, or Ph.D. plus 3 years, or equivalent work experience
Knowledge of C, C++, and/or Python
Knowledge of UNIX or Linux
Understanding of L2/L3 networking
Knowledge of IP routing protocols such as RIP, OSPF, BGP, IS-IS, or PIM is desirable
Knowledge of Layer 2 features such as 802.1d bridging, Spanning Tree Protocol, LACP, LLDP, or RFC 1812 IP routing is desirable
Ability to utilize, test, and debug packet forwarding engines and vendor-provided hardware component software libraries
Knowledge of distributed-systems infrastructure functions, including messaging, signalling, databases, and command-line interface techniques
Hands-on experience designing and developing Ethernet bridging, routing-related, or distributed-systems software is desirable
Hands-on experience with enterprise or service-provider Ethernet switch/router system software development, or significant PhD-level research in network routing and packet forwarding
Applied understanding of software engineering principles
Strong software troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Ability to independently design and implement solutions to small-sized problems
Ability to work on a small team solving medium-sized problems with limited oversight
