About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Develop software managing the physical Layer1 of networking systems
Write control software for connectivity components ranging from 1GBASE-T connectors to 1.6T long-reach optics
Develop software across forwarding engines, connectors, and interface chips/gearboxes
Build instrumentation and telemetry tools for monitoring and troubleshooting physical link health
Work with Optics teams to define standards for new media and bring them to market
Add new features, debug problems, and optimize code for scalability and performance
Own projects from definition through deployment and customer interactions
Interface with customers, product management, and hardware engineers to define Layer1 features
Architect, design, and manage feature development
Develop and maintain features using C, C++, and Python
Review and contribute to functional and design specifications
Build automated tests and test infrastructure
Work with hardware and manufacturing teams to bring new Layer1 components to market
Design software control interfaces for Layer1 components with hardware engineers
Provide technical leadership across features, projects, and tools
Analyze and resolve customer network problems with Customer Support Engineers and customers
Analyze System Test Engineer issues and provide fixes
Mentor new and junior engineers

Requirements

What you’ll need

BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering plus 8 years of experience, or MS in one of these fields plus 6 years of experience, or Ph.D. in one of these fields plus 3 years of experience, or equivalent work experience
Expert knowledge of C or C++ and Python
Knowledge of UNIX or Linux
Applied understanding of software engineering principles
Strong problem-solving and software troubleshooting skills
Ability to design a solution and implement features independently
Ability to work in small teams
Knowledge of digital communication technologies such as modulation and signal encoding schemes is a plus
Understanding of IP networking and/or distributed systems is a plus
Experience working with low-level hardware components is a plus
