About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide shelter medicine expertise to ASPCA programs and external partners
- Collaborate with sheltering programs to apply shelter medicine guidelines, principles, and best practices
- Build capacity among veterinarians and staff to apply shelter medicine practices
- Develop and implement efficient, practical, cost-effective veterinary care protocols
- Coach and troubleshoot shelter medicine practices including capacity for care, daily rounds, and pathway planning
- Lead remote and onsite shelter consultations
- Consult on clinical management of individual animals and populations
- Generate and use shelter-level data reports for decisions and recommendations
- Produce reports and support materials
- Serve in strategic roles in veterinary, educational, and animal welfare organizations
- Participate in developing industry standards and guidelines
- Ensure regulatory compliance for shelter medicine programs and community animal health initiatives
- Support change management and improvements to people, policies, and medical protocols
- Advise senior ASPCA leadership on shelter medicine, animal health, and animal welfare
- Maintain communication regarding critical situations and stakeholder issues
- Use trauma-informed communication and low-stress handling techniques
- Develop and deliver presentations, audiovisual content, website content, written materials, and training programs
- Coordinate continuing education for veterinary and shelter personnel
- Collaborate with ASPCA departments to create and deliver resources
- Use technology to improve educational delivery
- Support data tracking and evaluation of programming and training
- Collaborate on shelter medicine research
- Mentor shelter medicine residents and practitioners
Requirements
What you’ll need- High level of knowledge and experience in shelter medicine practice and companion animal population health
- Current veterinary license in one or more states required
- Strong organizational, analytical, writing, and presentation skills
- Skillful and diplomatic communication skills
- Ability to influence and lead teams without formal authority
- Coaching and mentoring ability
- Ability to identify opportunities and assist in developing projects and partnerships
- Ability to work under pressure, adapt to changing circumstances, and shift priorities
- Ability to work in a home office with minimal supervision
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary college required
- Minimum of five years of veterinary experience
- Minimum of three years of shelter medicine experience, including work with a variety of sheltering organizations at individual-animal and population levels
- Board certification in Shelter Medicine Practice preferred; if not certified, active progress toward specialty certification required
- Fear Free Shelter and Fear Free Veterinary certification required within 60 days of hire
- English (Required)
