About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Design, build, evaluate, and operate GenAI and agentic AI systems used in production by AstraZeneca Japan's commercial, medical, and field organizations
- Take ownership of existing AI platform assets and key systems for business users
- Ensure reliability, cost efficiency, and security of AI systems
- Work autonomously with limited supervision
- Provide technical direction and coaching to AI engineers
- Partner with business owners to ensure solutions address validated business problems
- Spend approximately 80% of time coding and 20% coordinating
- Raise the engineering practice of the Enterprise AI Technology Delivery team
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years building and running software in production, using Python and AWS or equivalent cloud
- 2+ years hands-on shipping LLM-based or agentic applications to real users
- Ability to demonstrate an evaluation set, error analysis, and resulting iteration on a real project
- Daily use of agentic coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or equivalent, including reviewing and testing their output
- Experience leading a technical workstream or mentoring engineers
- Agent architecture knowledge: workflow versus agent harness, tool calling, MCP, memory and context management, and guardrails against prompt injection and data exfiltration
- Experience with at least one agent framework: Bedrock AgentCore, LangGraph, OpenAI Agents SDK, or equivalent
- RAG with vector stores and retrieval over structured data via SQL
- LLM foundations: model selection, tokenisation and cost, context windows and caching, and when to fine-tune or self-host
- Production AI operations: observability and tracing, cost/latency optimisation, statistical regression testing in CI/CD, prompt/model versioning, and infrastructure-as-code
- Full-stack application design, data modelling, testing strategy, and secure-by-design practices
- Production AWS experience with Lambda, ECS/Fargate, API Gateway, Bedrock, and IAM
- Clear written and verbal explanation of technical trade-offs and uncertainty to non-specialists
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent experience
- Japanese at business level; non-native speakers require JLPT N2 or higher
- Native-level Japanese for business stakeholders
- English at business level for technical documentation and working with global AstraZeneca teams
