About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Directly handle claims involving complex coverage issues, including investigation, analysis, and evaluation of coverage, liability, and damages
- Directly handle coverage disputes, litigation, and arbitration matters
- Formulate claims and litigation strategies
- Assign, direct, and manage outside counsel
- Manage coverage counsel and litigation costs
- Collaborate with Litigation Management and Vendor Management teams on cost management and counsel panel development
- Manage discovery issues and responses
- Prepare company witnesses for depositions and trial testimony
- Provide guidance and strategic direction to North America Claims teams
- Review coverage positions for matters pending in states covered by Specialty Complex Claims Referral Guidelines
- Collaborate with the general counsel team on errors and omissions issues arising from claims handling
- Manage selection and hiring requests for coverage counsel in North America
- Identify liability and coverage trends and formulate claims-handling processes and strategies
- Support underwriting inquiries regarding policy construction, claim trends, data analysis, and risk assessments
- Coach and mentor North America claim teams
- Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Communicate extensively with executives, brokers, reinsurers, actuaries, insureds, auditors, attorneys, and vendors

Requirements
What you’ll need- 7-10+ years of claims management experience handling a wide variety of coverage issues and coverage litigation
- Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and management skills
- Experience practicing law and managing claims, including directly managed and TPA managed claims
- Ability to influence and collaborate at all organizational levels, internally and externally
- Ability to identify and resolve complex, disputed claims
- Analytical thinking and ability to drive results using legal and claims processes
- Ability to balance immediate claim issues with broader portfolio and customer service impacts
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Experience handling coverage issues involving a wide variety of loss scenarios and reporting to senior management
- In-depth knowledge of claims, litigation, arbitration, and trial processes
- Excellent analytical, investigative, and negotiating skills
- Law degree
- Admission in good standing to one of the fifty state bars
- Adjuster licenses in all states required by AXIS
- Ability to travel for team management, court proceedings, mediations, and settlements
