About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Directly handle complex primary and excess casualty and specialty claims
  • Investigate and analyze liability, damages, and insurance coverage issues
  • Draft and communicate coverage positions and settlement rationales
  • Assess exposure and establish and maintain accurate reserves
  • Guide litigated and non-litigated matters toward efficient resolution
  • Assign and manage external vendors, including legal counsel
  • Oversee budgets and billing and drive litigation strategy
  • Collaborate with insureds, defence counsel, brokers, underwriters, claims leadership, and internal Vendor Management teams
  • Participate in settlement negotiations, mediations, and settlement conferences
  • Maintain communication with broker partners and insureds and inform internal stakeholders of significant developments
  • Maintain timely and complete file documentation
  • Act as a technical resource and mentor to peers
  • Contribute to internal initiatives, process enhancements, and training sessions
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5-7+ years of experience in claims handling, litigation, or related legal/insurance roles
  • Experience with primary and excess casualty and specialty lines
  • Strong analytical, investigative, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to evaluate coverage, liability, damages, and claim resolution options
  • In-depth knowledge of claims, litigation, and trial processes
  • Ability to influence and collaborate at all organizational levels
  • Ability to identify and resolve complex, disputed claims
  • Deep understanding of casualty and specialty lines coverage and claim resolution strategies
  • Ability to balance immediate claim issues with broader portfolio and customer service impacts
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Post-secondary education in law, insurance, business, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • CIP or law degree considered an asset
  • French language skills considered an asset
  • Ability to work in the office three days per week
  • Ability to attend occasional travel or off-site meetings
