About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Provide hands-on support to laboratory and pilot plant R&D functions, including extrusion, granulation, and fluidized bed operation
Use formulation chemistry expertise to create innovative products and improve existing formulations
Develop scientific data at laboratory, pilot plant, and commercial scales to progress projects from ideation through scale-up and commercialization
Generate ideas to expand customer value and profits and differentiate Balchem from competitors
Use design of experiments (DOE) to explore multivariate design spaces
Document projects in an organized and transparent manner
Become an internal expert in Balchem technologies such as microencapsulation, spray-drying, agglomeration, and rumen-protected nutrient end-use technology
Act as project manager and anticipate challenges to keep projects moving forward
Review patent and technical literature and identify external technology developments
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and interface with Supply Chain and Commercial teams
Represent Balchem in industry groups and trade associations
Publish articles, file patents, and present at industry association meetings
Support product scale-up efforts, including infrequent travel to production sites
Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need

Research Scientist: BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Material Science or Food Science with 4+ years of experience
Senior Scientist: MS degree with 4+ years of experience or PhD degree with 1+ years of experience
Proven ability to be a safety champion in a process-related industry
Experience with hazard reviews, SOPs, and appropriate PPE
Professional experience in specialty chemicals, food, nutraceutical, or pharmaceutical industries or suppliers to these industries preferred
Mastery of chemistry bench skills
Knowledge of or experience with material characterization techniques, including DSC, rheology, microscopy, and texture analysis
Detail-focused working style
Ability to learn existing protocols and build new protocols
Track record of successful technical execution and publication in peer-reviewed journals or patents
Advanced analytical skills including design of experiments (DOE)
Proficiency in data management and analysis using relevant tools and software
Experience formulating products and associated material process steps preferred
Experience developing polymeric formulations including emulsions preferred
Knowledge of regulations pertaining to animal feed and experience working in a regulated environment preferred
Proven track record of scale-up in an industrial setting preferred
Project management experience from ideation to scale-up preferred
