About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform assessments and treatment planning and provide direct service in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team
- Support clients detoxing in their homes or similar community settings
- Provide individual and group counselling for substance use
- Monitor withdrawal symptoms and assist clients with symptom management
- Use crisis intervention strategies and educate clients on relapse prevention, community withdrawal management, treatment referrals, self-care, and family support
- Liaise with referring primary care providers and other agencies
- Provide health promotion and prevention information and strategies
- Advocate for clients’ civil and legal rights
- Partner with ethno-racial communities and organizations to ensure culturally appropriate services
- Help clients identify, build, and maintain natural support systems
- Connect clients with services, supports, and community resources
- Facilitate access to and coordination of services
- Create and implement trauma-informed day/evening programming
- Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and services
- Support quality improvement and continuous improvement of client care
- Participate in meetings and coordinate trauma-informed services with management and team members
- Evaluate client goals and satisfaction; maintain client records and collect service data
- Report accidents, injuries, occurrences, and provide required reports
- Manage program-related funds according to directives
- Maintain relationships with professional networks and service providers
- Represent the agency’s mission, values, and philosophy in the community
- Train and mentor students, new staff, and volunteers
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Relevant post-secondary education related to mental health, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or lived experience with mental health and addictions
- Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and clients to provide wholistic, culturally safe, and trauma-informed care
- Knowledge of community resources and experience navigating and connecting with mental health and addiction services
- Experience in mental health and/or addictions, with a community-based setting preferred
- Access to a vehicle, a valid Ontario driver’s licence, adequate automobile insurance, and a driving record that permits insurance through BANAC
- Understanding of provincial and local legislation, government policies, procedures, and practices pertaining to agency services
- Knowledge and practice of harm reduction, client-centred recovery philosophy, and community service delivery
- Knowledge of mental health and addiction community resources
- Good interpersonal and networking skills
- Knowledge of assessment, planning, and skill-teaching strategies
- Ability to anticipate crises and apply non-violent crisis intervention skills to de-escalate situations
- Ability to multi-task and work with a sense of urgency when required
- Knowledge of mental illness, addictions, withdrawal management, and medications, including symptom management
- Understanding of OW and ODSP services
- Ability to analyze issues and reframe them for clients to assist in problem-solving
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Enthusiasm for team-based care and collaboration
- Valid CPR and AED Certificates required
- Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License required
- Up-to-date clear Vulnerable Sector Check required
- Up-to-date clear TST result required
- Ability to attend all BANAC worksite locations
- Willingness or ability to work evening, weekend, after-hours, overtime, and regional travel requirements
