About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Evaluate medical records and provide clinical and surgical abstraction for complex and/or multispecialty surgical, procedural, and E&M professional services
Accurately code diagnostic and procedural information according to national coding guidelines and reimbursement requirements
Consult with medical providers to clarify missing or inadequate record information and determine appropriate codes
Meet department-specific productivity and quality standards
Code ICD-CM and CPT-4 for accurate APC assignment
Address National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits and reconcile charges as required
Abstract clinical diagnoses, procedure codes, and other pertinent information into electronic medical records
Create complete records and seek missing information
Refer inconsistent treatment information or documentation for clarification
Provide quality assurance and ensure compliance with coding rules and regulations
Compile daily and monthly reports and tabulate medical-record data for research or analysis
Identify validation edits and revision issues
Distinguish complex diagnoses and procedures, make corrections, and ensure accurate coding, reimbursement, and compliance
Work independently under regular supervision and interpret coding guidelines and LCDs as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need

3 years of recent experience in Pediatric Profee E/M coding
Specialty experience preferred
Active certification through AAPC or AHIMA: CPC, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, or RHIT
More than CPC-A level certification required for this complex role
At least 3 years of complex professional coding experience within specialty
Knowledge and understanding of ICD and CPT coding principles
Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a remote setting
Proficiency with common office programs, coding software, and abstracting systems
High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge and specialized formal training equivalent to a two-year certification course, or an Associate’s degree in a related healthcare field
Specialty certification preferred
Experience in a large, multi-system physician practice preferred
