About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Select and place surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgery
  • Scrub and provide instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies during surgical procedures
  • Prepare for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments and supplies and ensuring instruments are in good working order
  • Review case carts for correct instruments and supplies and plan ahead for upcoming surgical case needs
  • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs, pass instruments, and retract tissue
  • Demonstrate aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout procedures
  • Dispose of sharps and trash and place used supplies into case carts for processing
  • Participate in counting sharps, instruments, and sponges
  • Prepare instruments for cleaning following each case
  • Ensure surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate
  • Assist with operating room turnover between cases
  • Participate in stocking, replenishing supplies, and cleaning operating rooms
  • Provide business support and assigned administrative tasks as needed
  • Participate in or lead training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Current basic life support certification
  • Where applicable, registration with State Regulatory Agency
  • Manual dexterity
  • Ability to maintain professional decorum in highly stressful emergent situations
  • Ability to be conscientious, organized, and orderly
  • Ability to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient
  • Must stay abreast of new developments in the field
  • Completion of post-offer Occupational Health physical assessment, drug screen and background check (includes employment, criminal and education)
  • Graduation from a certified school of surgical technology or two years of operating room experience (preferred)
  • Additional related education and/or experience (preferred)
