About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Independently perform complex echocardiography studies for pediatric patients and adults with congenital heart disease
  • Perform transthoracic echocardiograms in inpatient, outpatient, satellite clinic, operating room, cardiac catheter lab, emergency department, neonatal and pediatric intensive care settings
  • Record, interrogate, quantify, and measure normal and abnormal anatomy or physiology
  • Produce high-quality images and prepare preliminary reports and documentation for timely interpretation
  • Communicate important findings promptly
  • Follow referring providers’ orders and established protocols
  • Participate in quality improvement and maintain laboratory accreditation requirements
  • Mentor and precept sonographers, students, and trainees
  • Educate patients and families about procedures and treatment
  • Assist with invasive/interventional and intraoperative procedures
  • Participate in CME, teaching, and precepting
  • Perform equipment quality control, troubleshooting, and maintenance coordination
  • Maintain patient, personnel, and visitor safety
  • Maintain confidentiality and fulfill ethical, legal, professional, and certification responsibilities
  • Support department workflow, team-lead functions, and inventory management
  • Travel to various facilities as required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Two-year associate degree in Allied Health or related field required
  • Graduation from an approved school for Cardiac Ultrasound as designated by the AMA and American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine
  • National certification required from ARDMS or CCI as RDCS-PE or RCCS
  • BLS certification required
  • Pediatric certification required
  • Minimum of three years of diagnostic cardiology cardiac sonography experience in pediatrics
  • Three years of pediatric experience in a dedicated pediatric echocardiography center, or equivalent pediatric experience in a combined adult/pediatric echo center
  • Ability to perform transthoracic echocardiograms for adult and pediatric patients with basic to complicated congenital heart disease
  • Strong understanding of cardiac physiology and illness
  • Strong time management abilities and outstanding people skills
  • Effective communication and human relations skills
  • Ability to analyze data and solve problems
  • Ability to travel between facilities and work satellite clinics
  • Ability to take holiday and after-hours calls
  • Current or recent cardiac critical care setting experience preferred
  • Ability to perform fetal echo, stress echo, or 3D echocardiograms preferred
