About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Coordinate referral orders for continuation of treatment, including specialty services and diagnostic testing
- Schedule specialty physician appointments and diagnostic testing per provider request
- Communicate with patients regarding scheduling requirements
- Act as liaison between patients, providers, and staff for referral and follow-up needs
- Educate patients and families and assist with external resources when needed
- Verify coverage, obtain authorizations, and communicate pertinent clinical information to payors, facilities, and specialists
- Track and manage referrals by monitoring outstanding referrals at 30/60/90-day intervals
- Follow up with patients when appointments are not kept
- Apply medical terminology knowledge and maintain current knowledge of the insurance environment and payor regulations
- Collaborate with outside referral sources and community resources
- Maintain an updated list of community resources and develop additional referral sources
- Communicate frequently with patients, physicians, staff, and third-party payers
- Prioritize tasks within established guidelines with moderate supervision
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge
- 1 year of direct patient interaction/experience in a medical, insurance, or healthcare related industry
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations
- Strong customer service focus and willingness to problem solve
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities
- Proficient with commonly used office software
- Completion of post-offer Occupational Health physical assessment, drug screen and background check (includes employment, criminal and education) is required
- Previous knowledge of managed care concepts preferred
- Working knowledge of medical terminology and ICD-9 and CPT codes preferred
- Additional related education and/or experience preferred
