About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage incoming member/patient calls to evaluate call purpose and acuity using established protocols and nursing assessment
- Recommend appropriate care disposition and follow up as necessary
- Assess physical and emotional health and medical history
- Collaborate with physicians and specialists to create patient treatment plans
- Provide treatment recommendations, options, and care resolution
- Review relevant healthcare information and document call purpose, information, assessment, interventions, response, and disposition
- Provide education to the public or other health professionals
- Participate in continuous quality improvement projects
- Facilitate referrals to physicians, services, and facilities, or direct individuals to appropriate departments
- Evaluate calls and needs using databases, evidence-based practices, and clinical judgment
- Research member history in multiple databases and electronic health records
- Use symptom-based guidelines and document calls for medical/legal purposes
- Monitor member needs and coordinate care with appropriate services and departments
- Provide direction and supervision to licensed and non-licensed personnel
- Interact with patients, families, physicians, healthcare providers, employees, community providers, agencies, and external healthcare institutions
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field
- Current, valid RN license in state of practice, temporary RN license in state of practice, or compact RN licensure for current state of practice
- Current BLS certification required for state of practice; not required for remote workers or Insurance Division team members
- Additional certification or continuing education may be required based on area of practice
- Five years of clinical experience typically required
- Excellent organizational skills and clinical knowledge regarding specialty care services and care coordination
- Knowledge of legal and financial aspects of diagnostic and health services in specialty area
- Ability to make autonomous decisions using excellent clinical judgment
- Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills
- Understanding of quality customer service principles
- Effective communication and writing skills
- Good time management skills
- Knowledge of word processing and database software applications
- Ability to teach clinical and non-clinical personnel regarding care and diagnostic services
- Good understanding of process improvement
- Bachelor’s in nursing and/or recent telephone triage experience strongly preferred
- Previous emergency nursing, pediatric nursing, maternal/child health, ambulatory, home health, or critical care experience preferred
- Bilingual ability a plus
