About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead front-end design programming for pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturing facilities
- Conduct site surveys, space programming, equipment evaluation and selection, economic analysis and justification, risk assessments, and regulatory impact reviews
- Participate in capabilities presentations to clients
- Contribute to proposal development
- Author publications and white papers
- Present at industry conferences and networking events multiple times per year
- Provide technical leadership for life science projects from inception through project scope development and construction drawing and specification packages
- Develop facility master plans and long-term capital roadmaps
- Design facility layouts, building systems, and infrastructure for manufacturing operations
- Coordinate manufacturing equipment integration with facility infrastructure and architectural design
- Create scalable facility architectures supporting expansion, equipment replacement, and technology modernization
- Ensure facility designs comply with FDA, EMA, ICH Q7, and applicable building and safety codes
- Support construction projects through permitting, bidding, contract awards, procurement, implementation, financial administration, and sequencing using BIM
- Utilize Autodesk Revit, Recap, and Navisworks
- Propose, define, develop, and oversee integrated EPCMV projects within budget and schedule
- Maintain current life science industry standards and incorporate regulatory requirements into project strategies
- Oversee designers and mentor technical professionals
- Develop and maintain client relationships
- Generate billable fees aligned with experience, commercial terms, company expectations, and industry standards
- Interface with Design Group professionals to maintain cohesive, technically correct solutions and resolve complex technical issues
- Provide technical training to clients and internal teams
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum of 20 years of facilities architectural design experience leading facility design, including project programming/conceptualization, construction documents, permit acquisition, and site implementation
- Ability to design cGMP manufacturing and lab facilities
- Experience leading front-end design phases, including master planning, feasibility studies, and conceptual design
- Understanding of operating facility requirements, general arrangement drawings, operational flows, adjacency schemes, environmental classifications, and regulatory requirements
- Working knowledge of local, state, and federal building codes, particularly IBC
- Experience designing greenfield facilities and renovating existing buildings
- Experience designing ISO clean rooms, labs, and processing spaces
- Experience designing cold storage and refrigerated processing environments
- Experience coordinating design with process engineers on industrial installation of production equipment (preferred)
- Experience interfacing with clients and establishing long-term client relationships
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Project (preferred)
- Willingness to travel for project requirements, installation and start-up activities, meetings, trainings, seminars, forums, and conventions
- Bachelor of Architecture
- Registered architect (RA) license; NCARB preferred
- Master of Architecture (preferred)
