About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design, build, and maintain REST APIs and backend services using Java and Spring Boot
  • Implement and evolve event-driven workflows using Google Cloud Pub/Sub
  • Synchronise profile data across multiple products
  • Improve service performance, reliability, and observability through logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting
  • Influence system architecture, data contracts, and event schemas
  • Design and evolve domain events for schema consistency and forward compatibility
  • Influence engineering standards, testing strategy, CI/CD improvements, and code quality practices
  • Collaborate with product teams to establish API contracts and deliver features
  • Partner with Platform, Data Engineering, and Security teams on compliant, secure, well-governed APIs, events, and data flows
  • Work with frontend and mobile engineers to define documented APIs using OpenAPI/Swagger
  • Participate in architectural discussions, design reviews, and incident retrospectives
  • Mentor engineers and support good engineering practices

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Experience building high-performance backend systems with Java and Spring Boot
  • Solid understanding of event-driven architecture (EDA) and distributed system principles
  • Practical experience with messaging systems such as Google Cloud Pub/Sub, RabbitMQ, or similar
  • Experience with NoSQL databases, ideally MongoDB Atlas
  • Comfortable working with and supporting production services in cloud environments
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines such as CircleCI, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI
  • Experience working in a fast-paced agile environment, focusing on flow efficiency, reducing WIP, and completing stories
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • Must be based in the UK or Ireland
  • Visa sponsorship is unavailable

  • Bonus: experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Bonus: experience with Keycloak or other identity/authentication frameworks
