About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Type memos, manuscripts, correspondence, reports, minutes, schedules, and forms
  • Maintain billing for surgical workload and outside vendors
  • Answer and screen telephone calls, refer callers, or take messages
  • Perform data entry from transcription of surgical pathology and autopsy reports
  • Maintain office-supply inventory
  • Maintain departmental records according to regulatory agencies and departmental policies and procedures
  • Maintain records of journals and books in the Pathology Library
  • Send surgical specimens for special testing and record information
  • Open and distribute departmental mail daily
  • Determine appropriate SNOMED and ICD9 codes for Pathology specimens
  • Report to the Lead Pathology Secretary and Lab Administrator

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Thorough knowledge of medical terminology required
  • Excellent typing and computer skills
  • Associate's degree in a medical secretary program or equivalent
  • At least one year of medical secretarial and office experience preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, including good auditory abilities
  • Ability to comply with infection-control precautions
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand movements and maintain visual concentration at a video display terminal
  • Ability to work under constant time deadlines
