About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Screen patients for MassHealth and other state programs such as Connector Care
  • Act as a liaison between patients and the health system regarding healthcare financial matters
  • Provide guidance on billing concerns, insurance options and benefits, coverage gaps, and payment options
  • Assist with patient statements, payment plans, pricing estimates, Financial Assistance, Federal/State benefits, and managed care processes
  • Support Patient Access, Hospital Billing, Professional Billing, and Customer Service areas
  • Maintain annual Certified Application Counselor certification for Massachusetts
  • Address financial matters and billing or insurance concerns by phone or in person
  • Help patients understand Explanation of Benefits, insurance policies, and covered services
  • Coordinate with departments, providers, and outside stakeholders to resolve patient financial concerns and coordinate benefits
  • Follow financial counseling protocols before scheduling procedures not covered by insurance
  • Provide timely service estimates in compliance with CMS price transparency regulations
  • Collect self-pay prepayments, outstanding balances, copayments, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses
  • Educate and enroll eligible patients in payment plans
  • Screen and approve patients for Financial Assistance (Charity)
  • Visit inpatient and outpatient patients to discuss coverage applications and payment options
  • Support MassHealth/Medicaid Open Enrollment and process applications
  • Address Managed Care concerns
  • Work with Customer Service on account adjustments, statement generation, and billing errors
  • Work on assigned projects
  • Follow corporate, governmental, cash, collection, and customer service policies

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma required
  • Maintains annual Certified Application Counselor certification for the state of Massachusetts
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills required
  • Must exhibit tact, diplomacy and discretion at all times
  • Must be able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, detail oriented environment
  • Working knowledge of MS Office suite and database systems
  • Ability to learn new systems as they become available
  • Ability to be thoroughly trained to meet organizational standards if needed
  • 2-3 years experience in a Financial Counseling, Social Work, Case Work, Patient Access or Billing field preferred
  • General understanding of hospital and professional billing procedures
  • EPIC system experience preferred
  • Ability to travel between Burlington, Winchester, Peabody, and Beverly Hospitals
  • Ability to work the evening shift, 3:00pm - 11:30pm
  • CAC Certification preferred
  • CPC Certification a plus
