About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead the hospital’s Risk Management office and drive a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Oversee all phases of actual and potential claims management for BID–Plymouth
- Identify exposures to loss, analyze organizational impact, and liaise with CRICO, legal counsel, and insurance carriers
- Direct and manage the Safety Event Reporting system
- Investigate sentinel events, near misses, and adverse events within 72 hours, with follow-up and leadership communication
- Lead Root Cause Analyses, Collaborative Case Reviews, Failure Mode and Effects Analyses, and other performance improvement initiatives
- Develop corrective action plans to address system vulnerabilities and prevent recurrence
- Support providers in disclosure conversations with patients and families
- Meet with patients, families, and staff to address concerns and foster constructive resolutions
- Collaborate with clinical and administrative leaders to track and trend adverse outcomes, malpractice claims, and complaint/grievance responses
- Design and deliver risk management education, orientation, ongoing training, and targeted programs for staff and physicians
- Serve as the hospital’s agent for service of legal process and coordinate litigation-related activities
- Provide guidance to staff involved in legal proceedings
- Act as the primary hospital contact for regulatory agencies, including Massachusetts DPH, the Boards of Registration in Medicine and Nursing, and the Joint Commission
- Lead investigations and responses to adverse events and oversee required reporting, Safe Medical Devices Act compliance, and equipment recalls
- Report to Administration and governing bodies on risk experience, claims activity, and continuous improvement efforts
- Contribute to strategies that build highly reliable clinical systems and improve patient safety outcomes
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare (Nursing or Allied Health)
- Current Massachusetts license to practice from MA Board of Registration
- At least 2 years of experience in Healthcare Risk Management or Patient Care Management
- Risk Manager experience in acute care setting preferred
- Proven ability to function independently and communicate effectively at all levels of an organization
- Knowledge and experience in performance improvement, patient safety, and risk management fundamentals, including Root Cause Analysis, Failure Modes Effects Analysis, Disclosure, basic statistics, run charts, and control charts
- Strong organizational, analytical, and computer technology skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Database experience preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Good listening skills
- Comfortable in emotionally charged settings with patients, families, and/or staff
- Experience in conflict resolution
- Prior direct responsibility for regulatory affairs and claims management strongly preferred
- Certification in risk management (CPHRM) or obtained within the first year of employment
- Ability to meet physical and environmental requirements, including frequent movement, lifting, keyboard and telephone use, concentration, and problem solving
