About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Research and identify federal, state, local, foundation, corporate, and other funding opportunities aligned with Big Ideas' mission and programs
- Lead development and writing of competitive federal and state grant applications, complex RFPs, and funding proposals
- Develop grant narratives communicating organizational need, program design, outcomes, impact, and sustainability
- Review grant guidelines and RFP requirements for compliance
- Coordinate budgets, attachments, data, organizational documents, letters of support, and supporting materials
- Manage grant calendars, application deadlines, renewal dates, reporting requirements, and funding milestones
- Maintain organized electronic grant files and records
- Support maintenance and renewal of existing grants
- Develop and maintain organizational profiles with foundations, corporate funders, government agencies, and philanthropic organizations
- Proactively identify and present viable new funding opportunities to leadership
- Collaborate with program, finance, compliance, and leadership staff to gather proposal and reporting information
- Support grant reporting, continuation applications, renewals, amendments, and post-award requirements
- Maintain reusable organizational content, program descriptions, outcomes, data, and supporting documentation
- Track submissions, award decisions, funding amounts, deadlines, and follow-up activities
- Provide leadership with regular updates on the grant pipeline, opportunities, submissions, pending decisions, and outcomes
- Follow up on information, documents, approvals, and actions needed to keep projects moving forward
Requirements
What you’ll need- Demonstrated professional grant writing experience with a proven record of securing grant funding
- Direct experience developing and submitting state and/or federal government grant applications
- Experience with foundation, corporate, or private philanthropic funding
- Strong research skills and ability to identify strategically aligned funding opportunities
- Experience managing complex grant applications with multiple components, attachments, deadlines, and contributors
- Excellent written communication, editing, proofreading, and organizational skills
- Ability to interpret and follow detailed RFP requirements, grant guidelines, scoring criteria, and submission instructions
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously with minimal supervision
- Strong attention to detail and follow-through
- Ability to communicate effectively with leadership and team members
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and move projects forward without continuous direction
- Strong time management and project management skills
- Ability to provide examples of federal and/or state grants written or substantially contributed to
- Ability to provide funding agencies or grant programs for which applications were prepared
- Ability to provide approximate dollar amounts of successfully awarded grants
- Ability to provide a writing sample or redacted portion of a previously submitted grant proposal
- Professional references may be requested
