About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own the data layer powering agency reporting
  • Build transformations that turn internal models into clean analytical tables
  • Make deliberate modeling choices around conformed dimensions, grain, naming, semantics, dates, statuses, and soft deletes
  • Build for correctness under the security model, preserving authorization scoping and permissions logic
  • Establish monitoring and alerting for data freshness and quality
  • Design reporting architecture alongside the core product lifecycle
  • Support time series, cohorts, aging and time-in-status, compliance windows, and point-in-time snapshots
  • Build reusable components for future reporting needs
  • Own BI reporting for a module end to end
  • Ensure BI data models express complex module requirements
  • Build stock and customer-specific reports
  • Enable the customer launch team to support customers
  • Intake new agency reporting requirements and align them with the data strategy
  • Validate attribution and build scoped embedded analytics
  • Build idempotent, upsert-capable importers for recurring customer data ingestion
  • Improve data mapping tools, documentation, and repeatable processes for legacy data integration
  • Build analytics foundations for statewide deployments, federal reporting obligations, and agency-wide dashboards

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5 to 10 years of software engineering experience, primarily in data and secondarily in backend web software
  • Strong SQL skills
  • Ability to reason about a large online application schema
  • Experience with dimensional modeling
  • Experience building and maintaining transformation pipelines with tests, documentation, and lineage
  • Skilled in translating government program requirements into data models
  • Experience with a modern BI tool and its modeling layer, such as Looker, Sigma, or Power BI
  • Ability to document and build reusable assets and self-service tools
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and working across adjacent areas of the stack
  • Eager, curious, and proactive in using modern AI tooling to accelerate engineering delivery end to end
  • Passion for improving outcomes for children and families in the child welfare system
  • Government or gov-tech data experience preferred
  • Familiarity with child welfare data standards and federal reporting, including AFCARS, NYTD, and CCWIS, preferred
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
