About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as the data compliance subject matter expert supporting delivery of the Blue Cross Data Strategy
  • Provide practical compliance guidance across the charity
  • Advise on the Direct Marketing Association code, PECR, HMRC Gift Aid compliance, UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025
  • Assist with Subject Access Requests and data incident responses
  • Review targeted communications and ensure valid permission statements are in place
  • Audit third-party supplier standards
  • Collaborate with marketing, fundraising, and digital project teams to design compliant processes
  • Help develop data quality KPIs and establish standard operating procedures
  • Identify opportunities for automation and process improvement
  • Advise on responsible and transparent use of data in Artificial Intelligence
  • Deliver training and guidance on data handling
  • Work with the Head of Legal and Data Protection Officer and colleagues in Information Services

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • In-depth working knowledge of Direct Marketing Association code (DMA) and Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR)
  • Good working knowledge of UK GDPR
  • Experience in the practical application of UK GDPR principles and effective monitoring of compliance, including Subject Access Requests and Data Privacy Impact Assessments
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly and calmly to non-experts
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities and different perspectives to find common ground and influence positive outcomes
  • Confidence and integrity to highlight and escalate risks
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to demonstrate understanding of and application of Blue Cross values
  • Practical experience of fundraising, marketing, and income generation (desirable)
  • Demonstrable awareness of Gift Aid and HMRC compliance requirements (desirable)
  • Experience of working in a not-for-profit environment (desirable)
  • Good working knowledge and understanding of risk management (desirable)
  • Experience of being part of a project team (desirable)
