About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Develop and own the Safety and Environmental Management Plan
- Conduct Safety and Environmental assessments throughout the design lifecycle
- Identify and mitigate potential Safety and Environmental risks through design recommendations
- Develop and manage Safety and Environmental requirements and verification criteria
- Ensure compliance with applicable Safety and Environmental standards
- Translate Safety and Environmental needs into defined and measurable requirements
- Analyze verification assessments for compliance with Safety and Environmental requirements
- Lead and support hazard identification, analyses and assessments
- Develop and maintain Hazard Logs
- Lead and facilitate Safety briefs and working groups
- Support hazard analyses and operational risk assessments
- Evaluate Safety and Environmental impacts associated with design changes
- Collaborate with engineering disciplines on Safety and Environmental initiatives
- Present findings and recommendations to technical and senior management audiences
- Mentor BMT staff developing domain skills, qualifications and experience
- Act as Technical Lead and Technical Assurer on specified projects
- Manage technical work and evaluate effectiveness to improve best practice
- Work within multidisciplinary teams and BMT Quality Management System processes
- Maintain continuing professional development and technical competency
- Promote a positive team culture through feedback, team building and wellness activities
Requirements
What you’ll need- Degree in engineering, occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, or a related field
- Minimum 10 years of experience in the field of safety and environmental Engineering
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the shipbuilding industry
- Existing registration or ability to obtain registration with Professional Engineering governance body in province of work
- Eligible for a Canadian security clearance
- Detailed knowledge and experience in the operation of Naval systems
- Knowledge and understanding of marine/mechanical design on platforms ranging from tugboats, barges and ferries to surface combatants, submarines, cargo and passenger vessels
- Experience working with shipyards, dockyards, owners, class and equipment manufacturers
- Experience conducting ship surveys for design and engineering changes, mid-life upgrades and vessel condition documentation
- Experience in the in-service support of naval systems and/or engineering design
- Experience in the development and use of technical studies and drawings
- Understanding of specifications for government and commercial vessels
- Experience in systems integration, ship construction and/or repair
- Knowledge of International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders
