About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide indirect and/or direct patient care within the Medical Assisting scope of practice
- Complete patient chief-complaint assessments, including respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature
- Document patient and family needs
- Participate in planning and implementing patient care
- Administer ordered medications within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines
- Identify significant changes in patient condition through data collection and report them to the provider
- Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to the provider, supervisor, or appropriate internal resource
- Maintain clinical and administrative skills according to departmental competency guidelines
- Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician
- Record medical histories, vital statistics, and test results
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens
- Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses
- Assist physicians with examinations and treatment, including injections, suture removal, and wound dressing changes
- Perform general office and prescription-refill support duties
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School/GED required
- Enrollment in an approved Medical Assistant program required within 30 days of employment
- Active Medical Assisting certification required within 12 months of start date: CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA, or NRCMA
- ABR-OE acceptable if unable to obtain MA certification
- BLS Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire and required prior to independent patient care at BSMH
- Completion of externship or clinical lab training preferred
- 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience preferred
- Ability to record medical histories, vital statistics, and test results
- Ability to interview patients and measure vital signs, weight, and height
- Ability to prepare and administer medications as directed
- Ability to collect, log, and prepare laboratory specimens
- Ability to provide authorized prescription and drug refill information
- Ability to explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions
- Ability to clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies
- Ability to perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses
- Ability to perform general office duties and complete insurance forms
- Ability to complete skills or competency checklists
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, and teams in a high-volume environment
- Knowledge of medical terminology
