About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide practical, commercial, and timely legal advice across banking and finance activities
  • Support stakeholders across BOQ, BOQ Specialist, BOQ Finance, and BOQ Financial Markets
  • Advise on SME and corporate lending, deposit products, equipment and vendor finance, novated leasing, structured finance, foreign exchange products, and distribution arrangements
  • Advise on developing and amending lending and deposit product terms
  • Negotiate bespoke contractual arrangements
  • Support the structuring, negotiation, and settlement of transactions
  • Provide legal guidance on regulatory implementation, customer remediation, mandatory breach reporting, marketing activities, and strategic transformation initiatives
  • Manage multiple matters and projects concurrently
  • Work with Distribution, Product, Credit, Operations, Risk, Compliance, and Transformation stakeholders
  • Provide clear advice, constructive challenge, and appropriate escalation when emerging risks are identified
  • Lead complex transactions
  • Contribute to projects that strengthen, simplify, digitise, and improve BOQ Group operations

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Experienced Australian legal practitioner
  • At least eight years’ post-admission experience
  • Strong technical legal capability developed in private practice, in-house, or a combination of both
  • Banking and finance experience highly regarded, particularly transactional business banking matters, SME business structures, loan facilities, equipment finance, or vendor finance
  • Practical understanding of the legal and regulatory environment applying to business banking
  • Foundational knowledge of property, corporate, and trust law
  • Ability to interpret complex legislative and regulatory requirements and provide clear, commercially focused advice
  • Sound legal and commercial judgement
  • Ability to identify connections across products and business functions
  • Ability to provide constructive challenge or escalate risk when required
  • Ability to communicate complex matters clearly
  • Ability to lead significant transactions and projects with limited supervision
  • Comfortable using approved AI and legal technology tools, independently verifying outputs and retaining accountability
  • Successful applicants must complete background screening, which may include identity, reference, criminal background, immigration, academic qualification, and bankruptcy checks
  • Must meet employment conditions relating to the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing Act
