About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Drive technical strategy and architecture across Core, designing scalable services, event-driven architectures, and shared capabilities for multiple product teams and millions of users
- Own complex cross-team technical problems from problem framing through implementation across data models, APIs, networking, and infrastructure
- Set architectural direction and establish patterns, standards, and best practices
- Balance short-term product needs with long-term technical sustainability and trade-offs around scalability, reliability, complexity, and delivery speed
- Raise engineering standards through technical reviews, design discussions, documentation, and hands-on work on critical systems
- Lead through influence with Backend, Data, Product, DevOps, and Engineering leadership
- Mentor and develop engineers across teams
- Improve platform reliability and observability using Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, and Sentry
- Contribute to the Backend & DevOps squad and evolve technologies including PostgreSQL, AWS, RabbitMQ, Kafka, Django, and Django Rest Framework
- Write and review production-quality code on technically challenging systems
- Help bsport become AI-native by exploring AI-assisted engineering workflows
Requirements
What you’ll need- Extensive backend engineering experience, particularly with Python
- Django experience is a plus
- Strong track record designing and evolving distributed systems at scale, serving millions of users or handling similarly complex workloads
- Experience challenging technical decisions across data modelling, service boundaries, APIs, networking, and infrastructure
- Demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives spanning multiple teams without formal authority
- Understanding of architecture, domain boundaries, data ownership, and interfaces across an organisation
- Ability to make pragmatic trade-offs; understanding that domain-driven design and interface purity are tools, not goals
- Ownership of ambiguous problems and willingness to contribute to product and design decisions
- Enjoyment of mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar
- Professionally proficient in English
- Interest in company-wide technical impact and influencing engineering practices
- Understanding of the opportunities and risks of AI-assisted workflows
