About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Drive technical strategy and architecture within the team and wider engineering organisation
Design scalable services, distributed systems, and shared capabilities
Own complex cross-team technical problems from initial framing through implementation
Make pragmatic decisions across data models, APIs, networking, and infrastructure
Establish architectural patterns, standards, and best practices for multiple engineering teams
Balance short-term product needs with long-term technical sustainability
Raise engineering standards through technical reviews, design discussions, documentation, and hands-on contributions
Lead through influence while collaborating with Backend, Data, Product, DevOps, and Engineering leadership
Mentor and develop engineers across teams
Improve system reliability and observability
Contribute to the evolution of the engineering stack and practices, including Python, Django, PostgreSQL, AWS, messaging systems, and modern data and infrastructure tooling
Write and review production-quality code
Help bsport become AI-native by exploring AI-assisted engineering workflows

Requirements

What you’ll need

Extensive backend engineering experience, particularly with Python
Django experience is a plus
Strong track record designing and evolving distributed systems at scale, serving millions of users or handling similarly complex workloads
Comfortable challenging technical decisions across the entire stack, from data modelling and service boundaries to APIs, networking, and infrastructure
Demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives spanning multiple teams without formal authority
Understanding of architecture, domain boundaries, data ownership, and interfaces across an organisation
Pragmatic approach to trade-offs; domain-driven design and interface purity treated as tools rather than goals
Ownership of ambiguous problems and willingness to contribute to product and design decisions
Enjoyment of mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar beyond the immediate team
Professionally proficient in English
Interest in company-wide technical impact and influencing engineering evolution
Understanding of the opportunities and risks of AI-assisted workflows
