About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Develop and execute assortment and inventory strategies driving sales, gross margin, and inventory productivity across assigned New Jersey retail locations
- Own vendor partnerships, negotiate cost and commercial terms, and optimize product mix between internal and third-party brands
- Manage budgets, sell-through, aging inventory, pricing, and promotional strategy
- Ensure compliance with state cannabis regulations
- Develop assortment architectures based on price bands, choice depth, and vendor partnerships
- Assign brands to pricing tiers and recommend retail pricing and promotional components
- Monitor consumer purchasing behavior by package size and adjust assortment, pricing, and promotions
- Manage the full product lifecycle, including SKU onboarding, performance tracking, and rationalization
- Identify, select, and purchase products according to the 5 Rights of Buying
- Maintain purchase orders and ensure complete receipt and vendor payment information
- Support monthly Open-to-Buy budgets and report performance to leadership
- Build vendor partnerships and negotiate terms, pricing, and supply agreements
- Collaborate on incoming brands, product education, and assortment updates
- Monitor industry trends and market data using platforms such as Headset and Hoodie
- Develop competitive pricing strategies and own category gross margin performance
- Deploy promotions and markdowns to manage aged inventory while protecting profitability
- Recommend monthly and seasonal promotional calendars
- Collaborate with Retail Leaders, Merchandise Planning, fellow Buyers, Marketing, and Business Strategy on reporting, inventory, and SKU-level performance metrics
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in business, Retail Management or related field, 5+ years’ experience or equivalent
- Experience with ERP and/or Inventory Management systems
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required
- Proven ability to establish strong credibility and build relationships, operate in an environment of ambiguity, and maintain strict confidentiality
- Working knowledge of the cannabis industry and the latest trends
- Highly analytical, capable of turning raw data into information and insights
- Strong financial acumen and analytical skills, with prior experience developing and managing a budget
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to develop and implement operational best practices
- Good judgment in a fast-moving environment, with the ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks with urgency
- Excellent business judgment, strong written and oral communication skills, and a can-do, common-sense approach
- Regular travel to retail stores, industry events, and production facilities within the market of responsibility
- Valid Driver’s license required
- Must be at least 21 years of age and able to pass a background check
- Must be able to obtain and maintain required state licenses based on work location
