About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Provide database support and strategy for ExploreK12's database ecosystem
Manage production support, upgrades, performance tuning, and disaster recovery
Configure and manage replication
Analyze and optimize SQL query plans
Manage backups and restorations
Optimize application queries
Enhance database tools and services
Improve scalability and performance of existing database structures
Maintain and monitor backup processes and test restorations with system engineers
Collaborate with infrastructure, developers, product managers, and other internal teams to identify system requirements
Monitor system performance and alerts to identify current and future problems
Handle private data ethically
Minimize database downtime and maximize database reliability
Predict capacity requirements
Review requirements, specifications, and technical design documents and provide timely feedback
Keep up to date with technological developments
Set database standards and best practices for application engineering teams
Provide technical guidance to engineering teams without direct reports
Report to the Systems Manager

Requirements

What you’ll need

5+ years of experience with engineering and/or administering databases
Hands-on professional experience building and operating performance-critical applications and databases
Significant experience with MySQL/Linux and SQL Server/Windows environments
Strong knowledge of relational databases, including normalization, indexing, and SQL
Knowledge of data security and integrity
Knowledge of a high-volume SaaS database environment
Exceptional verbal, written, illustrative, and diagrammatic communication skills
Ability to build strong relationships
Experience with student-data privacy frameworks such as FERPA strongly preferred
Knowledge of PHP or other scripting languages preferred
Experience with NoSQL databases preferred
Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development process preferred
Recent experience with iPaaS and/or canonical data models preferred
Experience leading or contributing to an on-premises-to-cloud migration preferred
Reliable cable or fiber-optic broadband connection with minimum speeds of 10 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload if working remotely
Ability to participate in video-based interviews and ongoing virtual meetings with camera on
Must not use note-taking tools, reference materials, or AI-powered tools during interviews or other selection activities unless prior written approval is obtained
