About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead a portfolio of diverse technology projects and a team of developers with deep experience in distributed microservices and full-stack systems
Create solutions that help meet regulatory needs for Capital One
Stay current with technology trends, experiment with and learn new technologies, and participate in internal and external technology communities
Mentor members of the engineering community
Collaborate with digital product managers to deliver robust cloud-based solutions supporting financial empowerment
Build and own Checkout and “My Trips” experiences within Capital One Travel
Unify checkout experiences across flights, hotels, rental cars, vacation rentals, activities, and cruises
Use programming languages, databases, container orchestration, and AWS tools and services to build solutions
Provide technical leadership across Agile teams and set standards for design, development, and operational excellence
Partner with architects to define service boundaries, integration patterns, and reusable frameworks
Identify improvement opportunities, implement targeted refactoring, reduce technical debt, and enhance system performance
Influence long-term technology strategy by evaluating emerging tools and practices in a “you build it, you own it” environment

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Engineering)
At least 4 years of experience in software engineering (internship experience does not apply)
At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies
Significant experience building large-scale, component-driven web applications
Preferred: Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
Preferred: 7+ years of experience coding with more than two of Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C#, Scala
Preferred: 3+ years of experience with databases and database management systems
Preferred: 3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies
Preferred: 4+ years contributing to open source frameworks
Preferred: 3+ years with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks
Preferred: 4+ years creating synchronous and asynchronous APIs
Preferred: 3+ years with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and automated testing frameworks
Preferred: 3+ years using Git-based version-control systems
Preferred: 3+ years troubleshooting technical issues within cloud environments
Experience with modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots
Preferred: 1+ year mentoring engineers and driving professional development within technical teams
Preferred: 1+ year leveraging observability to identify and optimize performance bottlenecks in distributed systems
Experience with interactive AI tooling beyond basic code completion
Experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large-scale technical initiatives
Experience establishing and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams
