About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead a portfolio of diverse technology projects and a team of developers working with distributed microservices and full-stack systems
Create solutions that meet regulatory needs for Capital One
Stay current with technology trends, experiment with and learn new technologies, and participate in internal and external technology communities
Mentor members of the engineering community
Collaborate with digital product managers to deliver robust cloud-based solutions
Use Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, open-source relational and NoSQL databases, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS tools and services
Provide technical leadership across Agile teams and set standards for design, development, and operational excellence
Partner with architects to define service boundaries, integration patterns, and reusable frameworks
Identify areas for improvement, implement targeted refactoring, reduce technical debt, and enhance system performance
Influence long-term technology strategy by evaluating emerging tools and practices in a you-build-it, you-own-it environment

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Engineering)
At least 4 years of software engineering experience; internship experience does not apply
At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies
Preferred: Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field
Preferred: 7+ years of coding experience with more than two listed languages
Preferred: 3+ years with databases and database management systems
Preferred: 3+ years with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies
Preferred: 4+ years contributing to open source frameworks
Preferred: 3+ years with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks
Preferred: 4+ years creating synchronous and asynchronous APIs
Preferred: 3+ years with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and automated testing frameworks
Preferred: 3+ years using Git-based version-control systems
Preferred: 3+ years troubleshooting technical issues within cloud environments
Experience with modern AI-based coding tools, IDE copilots, and interactive AI tooling beyond basic code completion
Preferred: 1+ year mentoring engineers and driving professional development
Preferred: 1+ year using observability to identify and optimize performance bottlenecks in distributed systems
Experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large-scale technical initiatives
Experience establishing and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams
