About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Serve as a trusted advisor to business leaders on key enterprise data initiatives
Provide proactive, business-focused legal advice and strategic counsel
Evaluate and mitigate legal, operational, and regulatory risks related to data collection, retention, sharing, governance, and AI
Partner with Risk, Compliance, and Legal stakeholders to design innovative business solutions
Apply data, privacy, emerging technology, and AI laws and standards to novel data use cases
Support Capital One’s Enterprise Data organization and foundational data strategies
Operationalize the company’s data strategy while balancing legal compliance and technological innovation
Collaborate across the broader Legal team supporting technology, data, cyber, and AI business teams

Requirements

What you’ll need

Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
At least 4 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, government agency, military judge advocate role, or in-house counsel role
Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, or Data Science
Preferred: 2+ years of experience with AI and product development
Preferred: Experience advising on US and global privacy regulations
Preferred: Experience advising on Section 1033 of the Dodd-Frank Act
Preferred: 5+ years of attorney experience in a law firm, government agency, military judge advocate role, or in-house counsel role
Ability to advise on cutting-edge technology, particularly AI and data
Knowledge of data governance and architecture
Ability to explain complex legal topics clearly and concisely
Excellent judgment and ability to anticipate long-term consequences
Ability to influence others and build collegial relationships
