About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Serve as Capital One’s enterprise-wide legal expert on the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Fair Housing Act, state fair lending laws, and related regulations and guidance
- Advise Consumer Card, Retail Bank, Capital One Auto, Capital One Shopping, and related support departments on fair lending and fair banking initiatives
- Support Fair and Responsible Banking Compliance in implementing the fair lending and adverse action compliance management program
- Provide fair lending legal counseling to commercial credit lines of business as needed
- Provide supplemental legal counseling on limited English proficiency, physical and digital accessibility, powers of attorney, conservatorships, and guardianship
- Review marketing materials and other communications for compliance with consumer regulatory laws and internal marketing policies and controls
- Collaborate with legal, compliance, business, and other stakeholders to mitigate risks and promote responsible access to credit
Requirements
What you’ll need- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
- Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
- At least 5 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency
- At least 5 years of financial services industry knowledge and expertise, including regulatory requirements relating to consumer credit products and services
- 6+ years of experience as an attorney working on consumer regulatory matters (preferred)
- Thorough knowledge of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Fair Housing Act, and accompanying regulatory lending laws and regulations
- Ability to build effective relationships with business clients, attorneys, project managers, and corporate compliance professionals
- Ability to prioritize and independently manage a significant volume of legal questions with multiple simultaneous deadlines
- Ability to rapidly synthesize new information and make well-grounded decisions
- Strong oral communication and legal writing skills
- Experience drafting comment letters or other regulatory advocacy documents
- Strong interest in technology and emerging digital capabilities
