About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead legal strategy and business growth across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada (LACC)
  • Provide legal advice and support for commercial initiatives and transactions involving the Discover Global Payment Network
  • Advise on commercial contracting and risk identification and mitigation
  • Negotiate, draft, and guide implementation of commercial agreements
  • Support credit, fintech, payment innovation, and new product initiatives across the global network
  • Support development and maintenance of products, rules, contracts, and the network ecosystem in priority regions
  • Identify and support process improvements, including contract template improvements
  • Partner with internal counsel, business teams, Risk, and Compliance across the enterprise

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
  • At least 6 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm environment, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate, or as in-house counsel
  • Preferred: 7+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm environment, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate, or as in-house counsel
  • Preferred: Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Ability to understand complex topics quickly and provide concise, simple advice
  • Problem-solving mentality
  • Excellent judgment and ability to predict long-term consequences
  • Growth mindset and openness to new ideas and diverse perspectives
  • Strong people skills and ability to build effective relationships
  • Solid time management and ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills and concise writing ability
  • Ability to work in person 3 days per week at one of the listed offices
