About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build and own solvent models, including thermo-kinetic, property and thermal degradation models.
  • Validate models using lab data and continuously refine them to improve predictions.
  • Interpret experimental data, engage with experimentalists to improve data quality, and identify datasets needed to build and improve models.
  • Develop accurate activity coefficient models for novel solvent formulations.
  • Implement solvers and optimisers to regress large-parameter models against experimental data.
  • Collaborate with experimental teams to design experiments and specify validation datasets and studies.
  • Prepare simulation plans supporting project goals.
  • Perform post-processing and data analysis using reaction engineering and thermodynamics knowledge.
  • Review literature and apply novel approaches and reaction schemes.
  • Contribute to idea generation, process innovation and intellectual property generation.
  • Prepare figures, reports and presentations documenting project results.
  • Present results to internal and external stakeholders and provide tailored technical solutions.
  • Work with wet-lab specialists and report to the Engineering and Process Research Manager.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline with relevant thesis work.
  • At least 2 years of relevant research experience in an industrial setting; 3–4 years preferred.
  • Experience building thermo-kinetic models for multi-component polar, non-ideal mixtures, ideally in CO₂ capture or gas treating applications.
  • 2+ years' experience in solution thermodynamics modelling of non-ideal, polar, reactive mixtures using gamma-phi approaches with Electrolyte NRTL or SAFT.
  • Experience building, solving and optimising robust kinetic models incorporating fundamental process chemistry.
  • Experience using off-the-shelf optimisers such as HEEDS, SciPy or Pyomo to fit large-parameter models (100+ parameters) to experimental data.
  • Proficiency in Python and process simulation software such as AVEVA Process Simulation, Aspen Plus, gPROMS or similar.
  • Experience leading projects and providing technical mentoring in an industrial R&D setting.
  • Comfort working with a global team across UK, US and India time zones.
  • Self-motivated and self-reliant, with excellent written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills.
