About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Evaluate and recommend commercially available, standards-compliant wide-area networking solutions
  • Develop traffic engineering studies and analyses to determine data network requirements
  • Perform cost/benefit analyses on competing data communications methods
  • Design complex integrated communication networks and develop network service specifications and procedures
  • Assist with Requests for Proposals and Requests for Quotations
  • Review and evaluate reliable, cost-effective, and efficient wide-area communications for the House
  • Provide senior-level operational support for day-to-day operations and complex WAN/LAN problem resolution
  • Monitor performance and bandwidth utilization of wide-area communication systems
  • Keep current with telecommunications technology changes and apply industry standards to House requirements
  • Train House staff in telecommunications technologies and provide technical guidance to junior engineers
  • Perform other official duties and special projects as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience designing and supporting large scale campus networks and/or wide-area networks
  • Experience in contract management, project management, SDLC, and change management processes
  • Experience with Visio
  • Strong knowledge of BGP and Internet Routing
  • Knowledge of DMVPN and IPSEC VTIs
  • Knowledge of DWDM and Optical Transport Systems
  • Knowledge of TCP, UDP, QoS, DNS/DHCP, TLS/HTTPS, SNMP, EIGRP, and OSPF
  • Skill in analyzing Sniffer traces
  • Skill in coordinating network engineering and integration projects
  • Ability to manage large projects and bring them to successful conclusion
  • Ability to provide engineering leadership across network analysis, design, testing, implementation, voice/data integration, and telecommunications
  • Ability to perform complex planning and evaluation of network systems
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with elected officials, senior staff, information systems professionals, and non-technical users
  • Must successfully complete a criminal history records check
  • May be subject to drug testing
  • Must be able to secure and maintain Federal Government security clearances
  • Must meet minimum physical requirements, including lifting, bending, crouching, and standing
